Hello and welcome.
Finding a therapist can be a random and intimidating process of trial and error. I hope the following information is useful in providing a sense of who I am and what I bring to a potential therapeutic relationship.
One thing I can tell you is that I start from a place of empathy for how challenging life can be, and respect for how we all struggle to do the best we can in responding to the variables and limitations inherent to our specific situations. That’s super important. If you, like a lot of us, got tangled up on your way to the present, congratulations on considering a way to move through that.
Two ideas are top of mind for me, right now, regarding therapy. One is the futility of trying to solve emotional problems with rational means and vice versa. The other is the necessity that the therapist knows, deeply and specifically, and with great interest and enthusiasm, the client. Not just knows about them, has ideas about what type of person they are or what kind of neuroses, etc., but knows them in a way that takes work and feeling and effort on their part.
My role is to know my clients that way, and to support them in the exploration of their feelings, beliefs, and experiences, using both rational and emotional methods to gather and organize the information. The goal is to create a comprehensive and compassionate understanding of yourself in your specific contexts. And in doing so, to discover other possibilities of how you can feel or be.
My approach is flexible, using Gestalt psychotherapy as a foundation. That means that the work is largely focused on present experience with a goal of increasing awareness of the full spectrum of one's self and one's experience. It also means recognizing that the therapeutic relationship is co-created. Sessions are open and creative in looking at any and all aspects of one's experience. Change happens within that context.
Whether you are dealing with something specific such as difficulty with family or intimate relationships; issues relating to sexual orientation, intimacy, gender and identity; coping with loss or chronic illness -- or a more ambiguous sense of being stuck, confused or overwhelmed, I am honored to provide the space and support to help you regroup and move forward in the world.
I believe that having a safe environment and willing partner with whom to explore the full spectrum of one's experience can lead to growth.
